Exploring Cape Cod: The Mid and Upper Cape (Part 4)

- Alex

What to do on a rainy day on the Cape? The Mid and Upper Cape is the perfect location for rainy days or just days when you can’t stand the beach any longer and need a day out of the sun. One of our many Cape Cod traditions includes going to Cold Storage Beach in Dennis for the sunset. There is a rock jetty that’s a lot of fun to walk out on and take pictures of and on.

During the last two weeks of July Barnstable County holds the Barnstable County fair. We went to this fair years ago but I imagine it to be the same still. There were ferris wheels and other amusement style rides, animals like elephants and camels that you could ride on, games, music, and food—all traditional things you’d see at a fair. I thought it was fun because I live close to New York City and we don’t really see any fairs so it was nice to finally experience one.

Although it’s not contained to just the Upper Cape, the bike trail is a great non-beachy activity to partake in. Stretching from Bourne to Provincetown, it is 100 miles of scenic trail. I’ve never tried it myself but I’d love to do it someday.
Hyannis is the ‘hub of the Cape’ and is the largest town on Cape Cod. There are many museums such as the John F. Kennedy museum, as well as shops and restaurants. Also, it has more of nightlife than the other towns, except for Provincetown, so if you travel to the Cape with friends check out some of the activities going on after the sun goes down.
Below Cape Cod are the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. My mom and her family traveled to Martha’s Vineyard for 20 years when she was a kid/teen and I went a couple of times as a baby. Martha’s Vineyard is like a mini-version of Cape Cod. Since both Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket are islands, you need to get there by ferry. Ferries leave from both Hyannis and Woods Hole—which is a small town at southwest tip of the Cape. If you’re interested in a day trip, Martha’s Vineyard would be a great place to go. On the topic of day trips, Boston is only about a two hour trip away as well.
My next, and last installment about Cape Cod is all about my favorite places and tips you should know.
