Celebrating Christmas Cali Style

- Cristina

Hello! I’m Cristina, one of the newest additions to Teen Travel Talk, and I’m from the golden state of California.
There is never a shortage of activities to do in southern California, especially at this time of the year. Regardless of your age or financial status, you are sure to find a way to have a good time in California at Christmas time.
If you’re in the Los Angeles area, there is plenty to do downtown. You can go ice skating in Pershing square, or enjoy Christmas music delivered to you by a world-class orchestra in the beautiful Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Speaking of Disney, there is one place that must be seen at this time of the year: Disneyland. This theme park is like no other at Christmas time. The entire park is redecorated to match the holiday with enormous wreaths, ornaments, and festive lights galore. The transformation of the Haunted Mansion ride into a rendition of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is truly a sight to behold. It combines chills and thrills with its eerie characters and fantastic decorations in a way that only Disney can achieve.

To really bring out the holiday spirit, the park is coated with a fine layer of snow–fake, papery snow. You can’t make a snowman out of it, but it’s just as beautiful as real snow (and not anywhere near as cold!).
Twice I’ve braved the holiday crowds at Disneyland, those endless mobs of families donning Christmas sweaters, with little kids toting Mickey mouse dolls in Santa hats, and I can safely say that the Christmas Disney experience is well worth the trouble.

After the presents have been opened and the tree has been put out on the curb, staying in the holiday spirit can be hard. There are several remedies for the after-Christmas blues: after Christmas sales, feasts of left-over turkey (or Tofurky) and pie, and gift sorting, to name a few. However, you can do those things anywhere, but putting flowers on Rose Parade floats is something that you can only do in California.
The famous annual Rose Parade, which is hosted in Pasadena, depends on hundreds of volunteers to bring its beautiful floats to life. Parents and teens alike flock to Pasadena and neighboring cities to help out every year, and it’s supposed to be an extraordinary experience. I’ll get to find out for myself in less than a week, and I can’t wait!

Whether you’re in the mood for orchestral holiday music, fun outdoor activities, or a paper covered theme park, your Californian Christmas experience is sure to deliver.
