Colleging in Poughkeepsie: Vassar College

- Callie

In short, Vassar College is a private, coed, and high ranking liberal arts college in Poughkeepsie, New York. (http://www.vassar.edu/) Poughkeepsie isn’t exactly your cool, artsy college town.  As a student, you’d probably spend most of your time on Vassar’s nature-y (and really pretty) campus,  but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do around Poughkeepsie while “colleging” (aka visiting the college as a prospective student). I visited recently with my mom and grandma. We found things to do, so if you’re staying in Poughkeepsie for the day, here are some things to consider doing:

Just a few minutes out of Poughkeepsie is the Culinary Institute of America (http://www.ciachef.edu/visitors/hp/). It’s a college for people learning to be chefs. It’s like any other college campus, except there are 3 restaurants on campus where students are cooking for and serving you. My mom and grandma really enjoyed eating here. The food was great, but as usual, I got full on bread before my food came.

After lunch, we did the coolest thing ever (if you like history and love the 32nd president <3). WE WENT TO FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT’S HOME! It’s in Hyde Park, the same town as the Culinary Institute. We were taken on a tour of his home, saw the bed he was born in, things he collected, and where he had meetings with Winston Churchill. We also saw his grave. He is buried next to his wife and dog. Finally, we saw a 20 minute film about him which was so inspirational I almost cried (guys, I love FDR!).

As of 2009, there is a Walking Bridge in Poughkeepsie that spans over the Hudson River. It is officially the world’s longest pedestrian bridge. I personally don’t see the appeal of walking over a bridge, but the view is nice and it’s also good for runners and bicyclists. If you’re into that kind of thing, it’s something to do. And if you’re not into that kind of thing and your parents make you do it anyway, at least you can say “Hey, I’ve been on the world’s longest pedestrian bridge!”
