New York City with family???

- Alex

Father’s Day. A day when most American kids go hang out with and appreciate their Dads by partaking in stimulating activities and “having fun”. Some families journey to the beach, others might go to sporting events, but for me? My Dad took my brother and I to New York City. You may be wondering, “what is there to do in New York with my Dad?” Actually, I asked myself the same question as well as thinking, “Oh gosh, is he just going to embarrass me all day long?” Well you know what kids, sometimes your Dad can surprise you!

We started off by walking the entire length of the Brooklyn Bridge from Brooklyn to Manhattan. If you are into picture-taking or just ogling at all of the strange people who cross that bridge, you’ll have a stellar time. (Make sure you bring some sunscreen and sunglasses if it’s very sunny out…I learned that the hard way.) I like to see the Brooklyn Bridge as a portal to the world, as you see all sorts of people up there. But nevertheless, trekking across the Brooklyn Bridge is a must for anyone visiting New York (be it Dad Appreciation Day or not).

Now imagine this: there you are, enjoying a lovely day walking around New York City. Somehow, you find yourself in west Chelsea and it is just about lunch time. Uh oh, you feel the rumbling from deep in your stomach and wonder, “where can I grab a bite to eat that is affordable and fun?” Look no further than Chelsea Market! (At least…that’s what we did.) The Market is located on 9th Avenue between 15th and 16th streets and has hours from Monday to Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., as well as Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Inside the Market, you’ll find a picnic basket of food opportunity, with unique food vendors such as: Bar Suzzette creperie, Chelsea Thai Wholesale, Fat Witch Bakery, The Green Table, People’s Pops, The Nuthouse, The Lobster Place, and so many more authentic eateries.  As you walked through this refurbished warehouse, on either side of you you’ll see tables for sitting as well as funny portraits of bearded men (yeah, I was a bit confused as well…). Enjoy the music styling of a local band while munching on a chicken du jour crepe and organic popsicle (like me). For more information on the Market, visit http://chelseamarket.com.

After a lovely lunch, my brother, Dad, and I subway-ed it up to the tippy-top of Central Park. For those of you who enjoy the great outdoors, Central Park is just amazing. A leafy paradise in the middle of a bustling city…crazy! I had never been to the northern end of the park before and I was pleasantly surprised. We encountered tennis courts, a waterfall, a lake, and a lot of happy people and green grass.

All in all, taking a trip to the Big Apple on Father’s Day was a great time for all. There is always something to do in the greatest city on earth that will please every member of the family.
