Christmas Across the Continent

- Justine

With Christmas right around the corner, the whole country is diving into seasonal festivities. Different cities have different ways of celebrating the holiday season, offering fun events and activities for everyone to enjoy, whether they celebrate Christmas or not. Here’s a glimpse of how Americans all over are enjoying the month of December:

New York, NY
For the second year in a row, Le Parker Meridian Hotel at 119 W. 56th St. in Manhattan is holding a Gingerbread Extravaganza through January 9th. Gingerbread houses baked by local bakeries and restaurants are on display, and for $1.00, you can vote for your favorite. And what would the holidays be without the spirit of giving? All the money goes to City Harvest, a food rescue organization that feeds the city’s hungry men, women, and children.

Louisville, KY
A new event at the Galt House Hotel on 140 N. Fourth St. called KaLightoscope is open until January 3rd. Visitors wander through a pavilion of brightly lit holiday sculptures that fall under different themes, such as “Santa’s Midnight Flight Over the World” and “Toyland.” The sculptures are inspired by ancient Chinese art, and some are as tall as 24 feet!

Riverside, CA
Check out the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa at 3649 Mission Inn Ave. for the annual festival of lights, a free and public display of three and a half million Christmas lights! Add costumed characters, caroling, elves, and ice skating, and you’ve got a fun evening activity for all ages. The display runs through January 2nd.

Asheville, NC
Also through January 2nd is the historic Biltmore House’s month-long Christmas Party. What started out as a Christmas Eve gathering in 1895 has turned into a festive tradition of 150,000 lights, caroling, cooking, holiday decorations, storytelling, and a Christmas tree on the front lawn that towers over 50 feet! Candlelight Christmas Evenings are a truly special way for the hotel’s guests to experience the joy of the holidays.

In Bethlehem, PA, they’re going to Christkindlmarkt, a market with ice carving and live music. In Salt Lake City, UT, they’re decorating Temple Square with hundreds of thousands of lights and a big nativity scene. How is your town spreading the holiday cheer?
