There’s No Place Like Home For the Holidays?

- Justine

Christmas is my absolute favorite holiday, and sometimes it’s hard to imagine spending it any other way than in the comfort of my living room here in New Jersey. Even when I visit relatives who live in a different state, a typical Christmas for me is spent in someone’s home, with a Christmas tree in the immediate vicinity and Christmas dinner cooking in the kitchen.

A few years ago, however, Christmas morning found me in the shade of a palm tree on a beach chair, drawing circles in the sand with my toes as I watched my family open their presents. That year, I spent Christmas about 2,000 miles away from my living room, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. It was the first (and only) time I’ve spent the the holiday in a bathing suit instead of a cozy sweater. Not eating a home-cooked feast, but a quesadilla and coconut ice cream. Making a sandcastle instead of a gingerbread house.

While I expected the lack of tradition to put a damper on the festivities, I found myself really enjoying the change of pace. Being at a resort on December 25th, I decided, wasn’t as weird as I thought it would be. Christmas is special no matter where you spend it, as long as you’re with people you care about.

To those who celebrate it, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas. To everyone else, enjoy a well-deserved vacation!
