“I told you so!” – A mom and her teenager’s tips on packing

- Luisa

By Luisa and Alex

As I handed her the computer print-out of forecasted temperatures in California prior to our California Dreamin’ vacation, I said, “Remember, Alex, we’re going to the great outdoors so you don’t need dressy clothes like when we cruise. And it’ll be cool in some of the places by the ocean.”

Since my daughter Alex is 17-years old, she packed her own suitcase without my supervision. It was filled to the brim with sun dresses, sandals, and shorts. Alas, when we got to San Francisco and Alex felt the cool temperatures, she quickly realized she had indeed packed all the wrong clothes. Rifling through her jam-packed suitcase looking for her one sweater and pair of jeans, she finally realized that her resort wear was now useless.

Rather than chastise her and say, “I told you so,” I allowed Alex to come to me about the situation. The next morning she said, “I should have listened to you when I was packing.” I told her that I’d buy her a sweatshirt in San Francisco to keep her warm during the cool nights there.

Since this was a learning lesson for us both (Alex, in regards to packing; me, in regards to keeping the “I told you so” to myself for a change), we’d like to share our packing tips so that you’re not “left out in the cold” – or heat. Read them at:
