Nai Yang, Phuket, is a great place to vacation! Unlike much of Phuket, this town is not crowded with ugly condos or apartment buildings. The people have a quiet, laid-back disposition, and it is a very family friendly environment. There are a few well-maintained hotels near the beach area. “Downtown” is a cute little avenue of boutiques and restaurants, the perfect place to spend an afternoon shopping and enjoying Thailand’s unique cuisine! Here are a few activities that make a trip to Nai Yang unforgettable.
During the summer, kiteboarding conditions hit their peak, and the beaches become a kiteboarding hotspot. Each day, gigantic kites soar overhead, like extravagant butterflies flitting vainly back and forth over the sparkling blue ocean waters. Their fliers skip along the tops of the waves behind, occasionally leaping 10-20 feet into the air. The precision with which they execute unbelievable tricks is incredible! Whether you’re an expert or a beginner, Phuket is said to be one of the best places to kite-board. If you’d like to learn during your visit, don’t worry, there’s plenty of schools lining the beach!
If kite-boarding sounds just a little too intense for your tastes, you can always relax on the beach! Here, crabs scuttle across the soft white sand, and waves curl gracefully, crashing powerfully onto the reefs. For around $5 USD, you can rent a beach chair and take a nap in the sun. Or, for a little extra, you can enjoy a relaxing massage. Try one of the fruit smoothies sold along the street for the ultimate beach experience!
At the far end of the beach, a tall resort stands in all it’s splendor. Although it is complete, it has been deserted, but was never taken down. You may be wondering why it was deserted. As it turns out, the owner never had the permit to build on that land, which happens to be a National Park. He never opened the resort, but never decided to tear it down, either. It is open to the casual visitor to explore. Inside, the floors are made of teak wood, the walls and bathrooms made of marble, with a pool in every room. Exploring the inside is quite an adventure!
Many of the restaurants provide cooking classes. It can be interesting to learn to cook traditional Thai dishes. For a small fee, Thai chefs will take you for anywhere from a few hours to a few days and mentor you in your cooking skills. You will learn to cook vegetable dishes, meat dishes, and noodle dishes. My favorite, also a very popular dish, is Pad Thai!
Phuket has some of the best diving in the world. Turtles, dolphins, manta rays, and sharks are just a few of the amazing sea creatures to be found under the sparkling Andaman Sea. Diving companies can be found all over Phuket, and are more than willing to take you and your friends out for a day of diving and snorkeling!
With all these great activities to be found in Nai Yang, there’s no reason not to bring your whole family along! Be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen!
