"the trusted voice of teens who travel"
October 1st, 2014
This is a beautiful time of year. With the leaves changing from green to red, yellow, and orange, the weather becoming cooler, and the many pumpkins, apples, and other fruits and vegetables available and in season, fall is a great time to hit the road and experience the best of New York and New Jersey farms. There are many locations to choose from, but the following may just be the best of the bunch.
Stuart’s Fruit Farm in Westchester County promotes the fact that visitors can pick their pumpkins of choice directly from their vines. The best pumpkin picking experiences require a little labor, especially if squash plant lovers want the freshest options available. Visitors can also pick up to fourteen different types of apples from their trees this month, so all those interested in pumpkin and apple picking one hour away from New York City should definitely plan to visit this popular farm.

Dykeman Farm is another attractive option for those who love pumpkins and other local and popular fall staples in the NYC metropolitan area. Crops such as sweet corn, apples, basil, parsley, and various types of gourds and squash (other than pumpkins) are some of the many fruits and vegetables available at this Dutchess County agricultural destination, which was first established in 1927. The farm has been in the same location since 1946, and has a good reputation with the locals.

Hayrides are available during the week, so people can enjoy these scenic tours of the farm with fewer crowds on weekdays. Please check out their website to learn more about the seasonal attractions taking place on their premises.

Alstede Farms is nestled in the town of Chester in Morris County, which is far enough away from the hustle and bustle of New York City to make a day of it to search for pumpkins, apples, and a variety of other fruits and vegetables on site. Sunflowers are also available at the farm, so those visiting the 600-acre property this fall should make sure to pick up a few before the season ends. Details about Alstede’s weekend events are available on their website.
